Studies have shown that people who eat small meals throughout the day consume fewer calories. A 1999 study in South Africa showed that men ate 30 percent fewer calories at lunch if their earlier meal was spaced out over a period of five hours. Eating frequent small meals prevents you from becoming overly hungry and binge eating at your next meal. The time of day that you eat does not matter as much as what and how much you are eating. Some people may find that they are able to eat three meals a day without overeating. Eating three times daily is healthy so long as each meal's portions are not too large and you avoid snacking throughout the day. The best way to stay healthy is to eat when hungry, manage portions and choose beneficial foods. As long as a diet is high in fiber, low in fat, full of vitamins and minerals and not above the number of calories needed daily, it does not matter how often you eat.
