    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

The "Iliad" and "Odyssey" are epic poems from ancient Greece. Originally passed on through oral tradition, they may have been written between 650 and 630 BC. The "Iliad" depicts the Trojan War (possibly 1194 to 1184 BC). The "Odyssey" follows Odysseus, better known to modern readers as Ulysses, on his journey home from the war.

    Homer

Both poems are said to have been composed by a traveling poet, Homer. It is not known whether the name represents a real person or several people or was a name used for any nomadic poet.

    Themes

The "Iliad" and "Odyssey" explore many of the same themes, including fate, mortality, honor and glory.

    Plots

Both stories involve heroic figures facing grand challenges, in addition to intervention by Olympian gods.

    Characters

Characters featured in both the "Iliad" and "Odyssey" include Odysseus (a mortal), and Zeus, Hera and Apollo (all gods).

    Contrasting Messages

The "Iliad" and "Odyssey" send contrasting messages about human nature and fate. The "Iliad" ends with the funeral of Troy's hero, Hector, and the fall of Troy itself. The "Odyssey" ends on a more positive note, with brave Odysseus home at last and his kingdom, Ithaca, at peace.
