Having the proper body alignment while ballroom dancing can make a huge difference in how you look and the relative ease with which you can perform the steps. Each portion of the body should be placed properly. Dance alignment is ballroom dance posture. There should always be a straight line leading down the body through the center of the head, between the shoulders and hips to the point between your knees. Obviously while dancing your knees won't be right next to each other but your center of gravity should be at the bottom of that line. Your head should be up with the chin, parallel to the floor and your eyes straight ahead or up slightly. Women will sometimes tilt their heads to the side slightly away from their partners. You should look confident. Your shoulders should be held wide and relaxed. You can attain good shoulder position by holding both arms straight out to each side then bending your arms into dance position without moving your shoulders. The neck is stretched as long as you can without straining it. This should not be achieved by arching the back but by standing up straight. The chest should be directly above the hips. A good way to become familiar with how this feels is to sit in a vertical straight-backed chair with your behind and back against the back. During most ballroom maneuvers your body weight should be distributed evenly between your feet. Lunges and dips will bend this rule but you should always be in control of where the weight is going.Dance Alignment
