Boxers don't necessarily cough because they have a cold or any other contagious ailment. When taking your boxer to see a veterinarian, according to Ron Hines, DVM, PhD, many questions may arise in regard to what is causing your boxer to cough. This disease is also known as Boxer cardiomyopathy and is common in the boxer breed. Persistent coughing is one of the symptoms of this disease, and a suffering boxer has not caught it from another dog because this disease is genetic. Lungworms are contagious in boxers, but not from another boxer coughing. Boxers can be infected with lungworms through the digestion of another animal's fecal matter. Coughing is one of the symptoms of lungworms. The worms can come up through the mouth or out in fecal matter. Lung tumors can cause a boxer to cough. A veterinarian can identify a tumor on the lung, which is very common in older dogs, boxers included. The suffering boxer may faint, and her breathing sounds may be muffled and loud. A boxer may be coughing due to distemper. This infectious viral disease can be contracted from certain wild animals, not just other dogs. Other symptoms of distemper include high fever, loss of appetite, lethargy and excessive mucus production around the eyes and nose. A boxer may be coughing because he has laryngeal paralysis. Although it is rare, the larger dog breeds are more prone to this condition. The throat will become paralyzed, causing food and water to seep into the lungs. This can ultimately cause a boxer to have pneumonia. Dog Pictures: Why Is My Dog Coughing?Congestive heart disease
