Although the mahi-mahi is commonly known by that name, it is sometimes known as the dolphin-fish. However, this fish is completely unrelated to the family of aquatic mammals that include dolphins.
Mahi-mahi weigh between 15 and 30 pounds and have very long dorsal fins that run the length of their bodies. Male mahi-mahi have rounded protruding foreheads.
Domestic U.S. caught mahi-mahi is classified by the Monterrey Bay Aquarium as the middle of its environmental impact categories. It recommends avoiding imported mahi-mahi because of potential negative environmental impact.
Mahi-mahi lives in warm ocean currents and tend to prefer to live in seaweed. Seaweed offers cover for the mahi-mahi's hunting activities.
Mahi-mahi is a carnivorous fish. Mahi-mahi feeds primarily on flying fish, crabs and mackerel. However, it will eat any shellfish or fish it can catch, including larger zooplankton.
