Salsa is a dancing style with a cycle of six steps (or dance moves) for each eight counts of music, leaving three changes for each measure containing four beats. Depending on the style of salsa, that fourth beat can be filed with a pause, tap, kick or weight shift. Salsa dance originates in Cuba, born out of France's contra-dance style and Africa's rumbas. Variations of the salsa dance were soon cultivated in Columbia, Puerto Rico and New York City. Salsa music is guided by a clave rhythm that dancers and musicians can chose to either follow along with, or work outside of. Common instruments include conga drums, bongos, bass, maracas and the piano. Salsa dancers are supposed to keep their upper body upright but are encouraged to move their hips. The dancing partners hold hands. The lead has the holding hand closed and his right hand on his partner's back. The follower puts her hand on her partner's shoulder and holds the other one open. Salsa dancing can have a more impromptu element depending on the setting, style and dancers. This improvisational element comes when the dancers modify the step sequence to their desire.Origins
