Isadora Duncan was a dancer, a poet, a political revolutionary and a teacher. Duncan's reputation as an innovator in dance secured her place in the history of the 20th century. Isadora Duncan was born in California in 1871. She died in Nice, France, in September 1927. As a teenager, Duncan worked as a dance teacher to earn money for her family, who was very poor. Duncan had an interest in teaching from that time on. She preferred teaching to performing. Duncan founded dance schools in the U.S., Europe and Russia. Duncan is credited by many with being the creator of modern dance. She believed in natural movement, and she frequently danced barefoot, wearing loose-fitting Greek robes and long flowing scarves. Lori Belilove, artistic director of the Isadora Duncan Dance company, writes: "Dancer, adventurer, revolutionary and ardent defender of the poetic spirit, Isadora Duncan has been one of the most enduring influences on contemporary culture." There are two stories circulating about Duncan's death. Both stories agree that Duncan was wearing a long scarf that got caught in the tires of the car in which she was driving. However, one story attributes her death to being thrown from the car and dying from contact with the pavement. The second story, the one generally accepted as the actual version of events, attributes her death to strangulation. The English actress, Vanessa Redgrave, portrayed Duncan in the 1968 film, Isadora.
