Although teddy bear and Angora hamsters may reflect up to 40 diverse color mixtures, hair length is the distinguishing mark of the two varieties.
While teddy bear hamsters may have long hair, the Angora consistently has remarkably long hair. An Angora's hair pattern extends from behind the ears to the tail. They may have a fuzzy appearance, similar to the Angora sweaters from which their name comes.
Both teddy bear and Angora males have longer coats than their female counterparts, along with a more prominent mane circling the neck.
Teddy bear and Angora hamsters are identical in one area: They are solitary creatures that must be housed independently. Even with their own siblings or blood relatives, they will become territorial and will fight bitterly with each other.
Opt for paper bedding instead of shavings for any long-haired hamster. Paper bedding is less likely to entangle in a hamster's plentiful coat. Brush furry hamsters gently with a clean toothbrush.
Choose hamsters with dry, clean coats free of tangles, bare spots or matting. A healthy hamster's eyes and ears will be free of discharge.
