You're reading Every time I go to a pet store to buy a goldfish, they always have them in a tank with an air pump. When I get them home and put them in a "goldfish bowl" they always die. Why is this? Is it because I don't have an air pump?

Hmmm...I dunno about the hard fast rules there..Mine are going on 4 yrs old now and I have 8 fish, some 13 inches or longer in a 100 gallon pond.. Yeah, i know..I need more room, but the space thing greatly depends on if you filter the water.
I only clean it out once a year, but have a large filter that pulls out huge amounts of goop every two days. I let nature take it course as far as leaves, dirt etc getting in there. Plant life helps a lot.
I have a filter that I run back up to a wall of rocks to make a waterfall which introduces air into the water (about 1-200 gallons per minute or so depending on how dirty the filter material gets). You HAVE to give them air so at minimum have a bubler but a filter will be much better. Plant life helps too and algea growing on the sides won't harm them a bit. it looks nasty, but mine are in a black plastic pond so I never see it anyway. The fish will feed on the algea and any other growing plants if there is the right plant apecies growing in it
