    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

On One Hand: Illegal to Purchase Without a Prescription

Selling antibiotics without a prescription is illegal in the United States. This is because widespread use of antibiotics can cause bacteria to become resistant. When this happens, the medicine that used to be prescribed is rendered useless. This means we would not be able to treat illnesses that can now be easily cured with antibiotics. Antibiotics are prescription-only to keep the population healthy.

On the Other: Over the Counter Internationally

Over-the-counter antibiotics are readily available in South and Central America, as well as other places around the world. Because of this, some stores in cities in the United States with high numbers of immigrants from countries where the practice is legal are selling antibiotics over-the-counter. The people who are selling these drugs see this as a service to their community, but many of the customers would be cured equally well with over-the-counter medications.

    Bottom Line

Selling antibiotics over-the-counter is illegal in the United States. The practice of selling illegal antibiotics is dangerous because it might result in bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics.
