    Other people may respect him, but it is only the Roman Catholics that recognize him as their leader.

    The previous answers are correct to a point: the Pope is indeed the head of the Roman Catholic Church, but the Roman rite, while by far the largest, is not the only rite of the Catholic Church - there are many (eg Armenian, Byzantine, Maronite)that regard the Pope as their spiritual leader. The Pope is also the Patriarch of the West.
