A SIM card is a memory card which can store phone numbers and personal settings. Some say that installing a SIM card in another phone makes that phone work as "your" phone but this is only true if certain criteria are met. Some carriers diable this feature, others allow it only if that phone is registered with that carrier. hope this helps.

The SIM card stores information about a customer account. The carrier uses this information to link the Phone connected to the SIM card to an account on their network. Once the network validates the identity of the SIM card, the phone is allowed to make and receive calls. Thus, if you drop your SIM into another phone*, it will still be a totally different phone, but it will be linked to your cellular account, whether pre-paid or billed. * to drop a SIM into a different phone, the other phone must be either: i) from the same carrier or ii) "unlocked". Some phones are locked by the phone company that sold them so that they only work with SIM cards that tie the phone to that carrier. * to use a phone that accepts a SIM, it must also use the correct GSM frequencies for your location. ie. don't expect to use a US phone in Europe, unless it is a "world phone". The storage function of the SIM card is merely a secondary function. It can store phone contacts and some SMS messages, but it is very limited in capacity versus the built-in memory of most phones today.
