    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

While there is no professional licensing procedure in the graphic design field, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a bachelor's degree in graphic design is usually required to get a job in the field. Graphic design is a highly competitive field in which those with web design and animation experience will have the most opportunities.

    Bahcelor's and master's degree

A bachelor's degree in graphic design is required even for entry-level positions in most cases. The curriculum in graphic design includes a design overview and the use of the computer for design. Students learn to design graphics for print and web use. Some institutions offer a master's degree in graphic design.

    Associate Degree

Some schools offer 2-year associate's degrees in graphic design. Those with associate's degrees may work as a design assistant or in technical graphic design production. Those with an associate's degree in graphic design may return to school for a bachelor's or master's degree.

    Design Schools

There are around 300 postsecondary schools with programs in design and art accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. Applicants may be required to submit a portfolio of their work in order to be admitted to a design program.

    Talent and Ability

Aside from a degree, graphic designers must exhibit a facility in the field of graphic communication to be successful. Graphic designers work with elements of typography, color, shape and visual images such as photographs and illustrations to communicate a message. Job applicants should be ready to show a portfolio of their design work.

    Design Software

Graphic design professionals must keep current with specialized graphics software in order to work in the field. Adobe is the leader in graphics software with programs such as Photoshop, Flash and Illustrator. Corel Graphics Suite is a popular alternative to Adobe programs.
