Latin American music is a hybrid of indigenous, Spanish and African musical styles, unique in its rhythmic structure.

    History

According to Piero Scaruffi's "A History of Popular Music," Latin American music as we know it today has its roots in early 20th century Cuba. After visiting the Caribbean, African-American jazz musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton began to incorporate the rhythms and musical structure of Cuban "son" into their compositions.

    Types

Latin American music encompasses a number of forms, including salsa, samba, bossa nova, meringue, rumba and tango.

    Characteristics

Distinguishing features of Latin American music include syncopation, or cross rhythms, the use of call-and-response in its vocals, which is drawn from African musical traditions, and repetitive bass rhythms.

    Fun Fact

Latin GRAMMYs ® have been awarded to top performers in the genre since 2000. The 2009 Latin GRAMMY ® telecast was seen by an estimated 12.8 million viewers worldwide, according to Spanish-language network Univision.

    Notable Names

Notable Latin American musicians include Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Celia Cruz, Rubén Gonzáles, Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony and Juanés.
