A LightScribe CD is a special type of CD or DVD that is created by a computer with a laser-etched label. The laser etching eliminates the need for a label to be printed onto the disc or applied to the disc. The key requirement is a LightScribe-enabled optical drive. Most optical drive manufacturers offer drives with the LightScribe option. You must also buy special LightScribe-compatible blank CDs or DVDs. The label side of the LightScribe disc is coated with a special dye. The LightScribe laser causes that dye to change color, creating the label as a grayscale image. Free software is available from the LightScribe website (see References) to help you design the label. Third-party software is also available for purchase. You can use text, graphics or a combination of the two, in the design. First, burn the data side of the disc as you normally would. Then turn it over, and burn the label side using the LightScribe software. Burning the label generally takes between five and 30 minutes depending on the complexity of the design. As of 2010, prices for LightScribe-enabled drives are comparable to prices for drives without the feature. Blank LightScribe discs do cost more than discs without the feature, but prices vary.Requirements
