I own a Canon Rebel XT with 8MP http://canon.greatdealson.net/31/canon-rebel-slr.html and I'm very happy with it, they are aound 500$. Not the cheapest, but compared to the prices a few years ago, SLRs have become pretty affordable. Make sure to go with one of the big brands, since you want accessories and lenses to still be available in a few years.

Digital SLR and affordable aren't two expressions that sit happily together. Have a look on eBay to get an idea of prices. A lot of digital cameras that look like SLRs aren't, but if you are determined to have an SLR you can't go far wrong if you stick to the most well known brands - Canon, Olympus and Nikon.

Affordable and excellent super-zoom (non-SLR) digital cameras include the Kodak Z812 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8.
