    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Coughing occurs when the body is trying to get rid of substances that are aggravating the air passages. Causes for coughing include infection, viruses, bronchitis, and chronic cough, which can be due to an underlying health issue. Coughing can interfere with sleep and leave you feeling exhausted, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you can't take cough syrup, there are several other treatment options to consider.

    Cough Syrup Alternatives

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are several alternatives to cough syrup. Ask your doctor about using chest rubs that contain the active ingredients menthol or camphor. Over-the-counter cough drops can also help control a cough.

If you prefer to avoid medications, heat up a cup of water and add a couple of drops of honey. This can be repeated several times throughout the day to provide relief.

    Prescription Medications

If you can't take traditional cough medicine, ask your doctor about antihistamines, which are given when the cough is caused by postnasal drip or allergies. If the cough is caused by asthma, an anti-inflammatory medication such as inhaled corticosteroids can be used to get rid of a cough.

    Determine the Underlying Cause

A temporary cough can be caused by a virus, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, if you have a chronic cough (which is defined by lasting eight weeks or longer), it may be caused by an underlying medical condition, such as acid reflux.

Maintaining a healthy weight and eating smaller meals (instead of several larger ones) can help minimize coughing. Also, avoid triggers such as mint, fried foods, alcohol and chocolate, recommends the Mayo Clinic.

    Avoid Smoking Cigarettes

Smoking cigarettes can worsen coughing. Second-hand smoke can also aggravate a cough. If you need help giving up cigarettes, ask your doctor about taking nicotine gum or using nicotine patches. There are also prescription medications that ease withdrawal symptoms.

    When to Call a Doctor

If you have a headache, excessive sweating or dizziness with a cough, contact your doctor. Urinary incontinence and tenderness around the rib bones should also be discussed with a doctor. These can be complications from a chronic cough.

Depends on why you cannot stop coughing. With cough syncope, learn to purse your lips and let your breath out much more slowly than customary. This will help prevent cough syncope spells if this is the reason for your not being able to stop coughing. Cough Syncope is associated with passing out completely and perhaps injuring yourself. Also, children can get Cough Syncope as well when they laugh. My husband heard this and laughed and passed out. He learned to purse his lips to slow down the rate of air he was exhaling. It helped him control his cough syncope almost to the point of not passing out anymore during his lifetime.
