Walking or running on a treadmill won't necessarily trigger a seizure in an epileptic. However, for people who are prone to seizures due to the disease, exercises where there is a potential for falling could result in a higher likelihood of injury and it is usually recommended that these exercises be avoided, according to Epilepsy.com. Treadmills pose a very dangerous risk of injury if someone loses consciousness while using one.
Exercise in and of itself is not dangerous for people with epilepsy, especially in people with well-controlled seizures. For aerobic exercise, an exercise bicycle is one of the safer ways to exercise because the seat is close to the ground. Contact sports are permissible as well. People with epilepsy should check with their doctor before starting an exercise program.
If there is an exercise situation that is high-risk for people with epilepsy, these types of exercises should either be avoided or be very closely supervised by people who are properly trained to do so. High-risk sports include skydiving, scuba diving and rock climbing. Using a treadmill or swimming pose great risks as well.
