I dont know much about the WW11, but to my knowledge about the red cross ,they cared far the men who fought far are country. So i think that the red cross provided free coffee during the WW11.
I can't answer that first hand. But my father, who served in the Pacific (New Guinea) during WWII had a real resentment toward the Red Cross. There were multiple reasons but one, as I recall, was their having charged too much for certain things. It seems, if my memory serves me correctly, that it was cigarettes that he was upset about.
Also, during a very hard time for my mother, an 18-year-old with a baby (me) left alone in California with no family and few friends (when dad got called back into active duty) she went to the Red Cross to seek help. She was treated rudely. That's pretty much all I know.
Footnote: Mom worked 3 part-time jobs (no benefits) to care for me and herself. She sold doughnuts and coffee in a storefront shop in Long Beach, California from shortly before 6 am til 10 am - then walked a few blocks to Sears and was a salesclerk from 11 til 4:30 and then was a cocktail waitress at the Silver Dollar from 5 until closing. In other words, while dad was overseas, she was working her butt off. There was no help from any government agencies. Dad's "pay" got to her from time to time but that was nothing that could be counted on.
