Just like humans, dogs can develop illnesses that produce coughing. If your dog coughs excessively, particularly in the morning hours, you might want to seek the advice of a veterinarian. Coughing is caused by an irritation of the throat, the lungs or the airway. When determining the cause of coughing in dogs, the veterinarian will take into consideration several factors. These may include the time of day the coughing is at its worst, frequency of the cough and if the cough is induced by activity. According to the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine (WSUCVM), dogs that have symptoms of heart failure may cough more during the nighttime and early morning hours. This can often be attributed to abnormal heart rate, abnormal rhythms or a heart murmur. Kennel cough is an infection that can cause excessive coughing in dogs. This condition may worsen during the night and into the early morning hours. Kennel cough often resolves on its own without any medication. However, if your dog's cough lasts longer than 10 days, consult your veterinarian. According to WSUCVM, young dogs are at greater risk of developing a virus that leads to coughing. Middle-aged and older smaller breed dogs can develop heart disease. Middle-aged and older large breeds are often at an increased risk of developing a cough due to problems with the larynx. Coughing in dogs is often mild, but it can become severe. It is important to consult a veterinarian if your dog continues to cough, as it may be a sign of a serious condition.
