Pelican Island was designated a wildlife refuge on March l4, l903, by President Theodore Roosevelt. It would become the first unit of the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS).

    Tourism

Forty million people visit national wildlife refuges each year, generating $1.7 billion in sales for regional economies and employing nearly 27,000 people.

    Inhabitants

The NWRS is home to 220 species of mammals, 700 species of birds, 250 species of reptiles and amphibians, and more than 200 species of fish.

    Hunting and Fishing

The NWRS has more than 300 hunting programs on refuges and Waterfowl Production Areas, with 270 refuges allowing freshwater and saltwater fishing.
