    Both Phentermine and Fastin are used as a weight loss aid. Phentermine (formerly sold as Fastin) has to have a prescription but you can purchase the new form of Fastin, which is produced by another company, over the counter.

    Brands

    Fastin does not come in a generic form, but the brand name drugs Adipex and Lonamin come in the generic form called Phentermine. The drug known as Fastin was formerly made with Phentermine. This form was discontinued in 1998.

    Misconceptions

    At one time patients taking the discontinued Fastin believed that pharmaceutical companies did not redesign the medication to contain a different ingredient other than Phentermine. They indeed did make the drug Fastin with an alternate ingredient and in doing so began to advertise that the drug used to only be distributed by prescription. However, the newer drug known as Fastin is available without a prescription and contains phenylethylamine HCL instead of Phentermine.

    Time Frame for Drug Use

    You should take either Phentermine or Fastin for a limited amount of time. The suggested time frame use is for no longer than 12 weeks, because both drugs may become habit-forming or addictive to some individuals.

    Drug Warnings

    Fastin and Phentermine can cause fatalities or serious conditions if not properly taken as prescribed. A physician should follow a patient closely when prescribing either of these medications.

    Drug Costs

    The cost of both Phentermine and Fastin will of course depend on what insurance coverage you have. Both drugs are on the pricey side and the cost is fairly high if no insurance is involved. If taken for the short length recommended, costs should not exceed affordability.
