You're reading Who is the truthful, honest character in bible?

He said You will not surely die - i consider that a lie. And besides, he only said a few verses of things.
by littowadey on April 10th, 2007
I think you're right. Did she die? No, not because of the fruit.
by EL1 2 on April 10th, 2007
They lived almost another 900 years. I don't think that the serpent lied. In fact, the serpent said the fruit would give knowledge, which it did. It was Yahweh who said it would cause them to die, which it didn't.
by AntigoneRising on April 10th, 2007
Yes - because of the fruit. The only commandment was to not eat from the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil.
Genesis 2:16-17 says "And the LORD God commanded the man, 'You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.' And they did die, even though it was after 900 years, they died. You don't know if they died spiritually either.
by littowadey on April 10th, 2007
Not for another 900 years though. After 900 years, it can be reasonable assumed that they died of something else, like cancer or a tiger, eh? The "when" in the quote implies a sense of immediacy, as if they will die right after they eat it.
by EL1 2 on April 10th, 2007
If they were immortal to begin with, why was Yahweh concerned about them eating from the Tree of Life and living forever? That makes no sense. In such a case, he would have said, "You will surely die," and they would have said, "What is die? What's that mean?"
by AntigoneRising on April 10th, 2007
The question asks if he was honest and truthful. I would say no - the serpent was very deceptive.
by littowadey on April 10th, 2007
Name one thing the serpent said that was untrue. Since they did not die until almost 900 years after eating the fruit, I'd say he was pretty damn good on that one. Do you have another example, or do you merely say he was deceptive because you've been TOLD that he was?
by AntigoneRising on April 10th, 2007
Well - Assuming that God is omniscient and all truthful, the serpent said exactly opposite what God said. Therefore logically, I'm saying that the serpent was lying.
by littowadey on April 10th, 2007
Ah, why are we assuming that Yahweh is truthful and omniscient? Can we not read the text and determine who was lying and who was telling the truth? Also, if Yahweh is omniscient, why did He have to ask Adam and Eve whether or not they had eaten from the tree?
by AntigoneRising on April 10th, 2007
We can read the text - and if you DO take the Bible as a source, you must look at it in its entirety. Throughout the Bible, we see that He is truthful and has fulfilled many prophecies. The question was a rhetorical to see if they would confess to their sin.
by littowadey on April 10th, 2007
Well the fact that Adam and Eve did indeed die proves it was the serpent who was lying and not God.

Without "the serpent" Adam and Eve would have spent eternity in the garden in a state of stupidity. We should thank "the serpent" if you think about it. If you believe the crazy stories of the bible none of us would exist without him saying to take the fruit. People who gave negative points need to think out of the box not be robots.
by holdmysuit on April 10th, 2007
Intelligence is only a small part of it. I'd rather be in perfect relationship with God than be smart. Either way, we aren't robots, God created within humankind a free will.
by littowadey on April 10th, 2007
If he created us with true free will and the story of the garden of eden is real what is the purpose of the tree of knowledge. Also you would have no relationship with god becouse you would have never been born.
