Help answer this question below.
Before takeoff and landing, most airlines require passengers to open the shades on their windows. People often wonder why this is required, and the answer has to do with both safety and common sense. Most airplane accidents occur on takeoff or landing. These are the two most dangerous times of the flight, and these are the times when you may be asked to raise your window shades. The Federal Aviation Authority has issued a recommendation that passenger window shades remain open on takeoff and landing and this has become standard operating procedure on most airlines, although it is not required. Raising the window shades makes it easier for the cabin crew and passengers to adjust their eyes to the natural light outside. If there is an evacuation, passengers and crew will not waste precious moments while their eyes adjust to the sudden brightness. Passengers and crew will also be better oriented and able to exit the plane faster. Raising the window shades also allows cabin crew members to quickly see the conditions outside the plane in an emergency. They can check for smoke, fire and debris and more easily decide where and how the passengers should exit the plane. Airlines may also like the shades open during takeoff and landing because, if there is an emergency, the passengers, especially those sitting near the emergency exits, can see any hazards outside and more easily decide how to exit the plane.Significance
