Is 80 a lucky number for the traffic engineer or was he/she 80 years old when he/she designed the Interstate system? Why not just start at 1 and work upwards? I have driven on all of these highways at one time or another but never realized until now that they all have 80 in the name
With the interstate highways, the one and two digit numbers are used for the main highways that actually go across the country. The three digit numbers designate local spurs off of the main interstate. I-80 is the major highway that goes from San Francisco to New York City. I-880, etc. are spurs off of I-80 that carry traffic to different parts of various metropolitan areas through which I-80 passes.
Do you remember the car you were riding in when you went the fastest you have ever been? (not driving - riding.) How did it feel?
