If your dog belongs to a breed that has been deemed dangerous or likely to bite, you are automatically responsible if the dog bites someone, regardless of the circumstances.
If you have been negligent in handling your dog and your dog bites someone, you will also be liable for any damage your dog inflicts. Negligence includes allowing your dog to roam at large or not properly securing it with a fence or chain.
If your dog bites, your dog will be quarantined for up to 10 days to observe for signs of rabies. You will also be asked to provide proof of rabies vaccination. If you cannot prove vaccination, your dog can be euthanized and tested.
If you are liable for the injury, you will need to make arrangements to pay for any medical expenses incurred for the treatment of the bite. If you do not, you can be sued for damages.
If your dog has exhibited behavior that may be deemed dangerous and has bitten someone, you will be required to carry homeowner's insurance at appropriate levels to cover any future attacks that may result in injury. You may also be subject to having to keep your dog indoors or in a locked enclosure to prevent accidental contact with the public.
