    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

On One Hand: Advantages of Rear Wheel Drive

Rear wheel drive vehicles focus the power of the vehicle on the back tires. These vehicles offer several advantages, including a more nimble feel and excellent load and wear dispersion amongst the four tires. Rear wheel drive vehicles also offer better acceleration, since the center of gravity of the car pushes to the rear during acceleration, and traction in the rear wheels increases proportionately with increases in acceleration.

On the Other: Advantages of Front Wheel Drive

Front wheel drive vehicles offer many advantages over rear wheel drive vehicles. First, they offer stability, since traction is relative to weight over a tire, and all of the acceleration and engine weight sits on top of the front tires. Furthermore, because all of the mechanical components are housed together, it reduces the production cost of the vehicle and increases the available cabin space for passenger or cargo use.

    Bottom Line

When it comes to deciding between front or rear wheel drive, it is important to consider the use and road conditions you can expect. For snowy conditions, there is no argument with Isaac Newton or the laws of physics. The additional weight of the engine, and the pull effect of front wheel drive, means that, without a doubt, front wheel drive vehicles are the clear winner. Even with electronics on board to correct for traction imbalances, traction control systems are still recommended to be turned off in icy conditions, according to manufacturers recommendations. That negates any electronic advantage a rear wheel drive system could incorporate.
