Aquatic turtles and semi-aquatic (land) turtles are the two types of turtles typically kept as pets.
Aquatic turtles need at least a 20- to 40-gallon aquarium tank with a water filter, heating element, aquarium lamp with an ultraviolet light bulb, basking rock, hiding place and gravel to dig in.
Land turtles need an enclosure that is at least 2 feet wide, 3 feet long and 1 to 2 feet tall. A food dish, water dish, full-spectrum light, hiding place and some substrate or newspaper to dig in are all required, according to Allturtles.com.
Turtles are cold-blooded reptiles that cannot generate body heat. Your pet turtle will absorb heat from its environment and needs to dwell in temperatures of 80 degrees F during the day and 70 degrees F at night, according to Petturtle.com.
Land and water turtles eat commercial turtle pellets. Water turtles also enjoy live bait such as feeder fish, and land turtles can eat vegetables such as lettuce.
Clean your turtle's habitat regularly. A water turtle needs its tank cleaned every seven to 14 days, and a land turtle needs its substrate or newspaper changed every three days to prevent bacteria from growing, according to Allturtles.com.
