I want to add that President Reagan said that we don't need the regulations. Regulations stated that commercials could run no more than 4 minutes at a time and for only 16 minutes per hour. Reagan said that stations were showing an average of 12 minutes of commercials per hour anyway so there was no need to regulate. Regulations also stated that you could not turn up the volume on the commercial or use subliminal messages. Reagan said none of these violations were happening so there was no need for the rules. Reagan said that the average commercial runs only 2 minutes. Why do we need to regulate the length at 4 minutes. Today, the average commercial break runs 4 minutes. Stations now show an average of 20 minutes of commercial time per hour, with some channels showing up to 25.

You're reading Do we need to regulate TV commercials? Regulations stopped in 1985. Since then commercial time has gone from 12 minutes per hour to 20.
