I believe that backing up of your files should be a routine thing that you do often. Some don't agree with me. However, it is so little trouble to do it and I enjoy the peace of mind. So, of course, my answer is yes - do back them up.
But, do I think there is a likelihood that you will have issues doing the installation and regret not backing them up? No - I don't think there is a high probability of your having such issues.
Still - Murphy's Law has kicked in so often in my life that I would not dream of installing Windows 7 to replace Vista without first backing up my files.
Ask yourself these two questions. How long has it been since I backed up my files? How much will I miss the work I've done and the things I've saved since then if I were to lose it all? Then proceed accordingly.
