    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

There are various reasons for providing controlled access logins to your website. Whatever they are, you first must decide whether the entire site, or only specific sections, should have controlled access and require logins. The steps vary depending on your choice, but in each case you must provide an opportunity for users to gain a user name and login password.

    Creating Login to Entire Site

To close the entire site, you must change the anonymous browsing on your root web to user-only browsing, forcing login when a visitor enters the site. It is important to note that these changes cannot be made to your website if it is not connected to a server. Unless you have set your computer up as a FrontPage server, this means you need to open your published website and then work on the live site.

Use file/open, and then enter the URL of your web site. Example: http://mywebsite.com. You will be asked for the password you use to publish and then your live website will open on your computer.

Once your live site is open in FrontPage, select tools/server/permissions. You might again be asked for your user name and password. After you supply it, a page will open offering you the options for securing your website with password-protected user logins.

First turn off the anonymous access. Then add a user or users. You will have the option of giving different users different roles, from browsing only all the way to complete editing access. You will be asked for the passwords. These cannot be changed later, so plan ahead and have the passwords you desire handy. You can also add different roles and specify their access.

Once you have added users and specified roles, you will have an option to send an invitation. Each team member that you invite receives an email about the site and is then granted access to the site.

Creating User Logins for Various Pages or Sections

If you wish to control access only to specific sections of your website, you must set those sections into sub webs, then use the same steps as above to set logins for the sub webs.

Providing Option for Users to Receive a Login

You can provide a form your visitors can use to apply for access to any protected sections of your web site -- or to the entire site if that is how you protected it. If it is to the entire site, this form must be placed on the index.html page.

With your root (primary) web open, select file/new/page or web. From the new document task pane, choose page templates, then under the general tab, select "User Registration." Follow the instructions provided to finish this page and then publish it to your server.

If it is going to be anywhere other than your index page, you will need to provide links to it from appropriate, open-access, pages in your website.

    Important Note

You cannot provide browser registration if your website is on a Microsoft server. Only Unix servers permit browser form registration. When you publish the user registration form page, you will receive error messages if your website is housed on a Microsoft server. If this occurs, contact your Web host and ask whether your site can be moved to a Unix server.
