both , but for the not so rich, its more the write offs....
have you seen the biggest 60 givers , oprah is # 25.....these have always given millions......

- No...I haven't seen that. Oprah is a billionaire and I think she is very conscious of her roots and her past and is driven to give back to those in need. I think she has a very good heart and don't doubt her sincerity for a minute. There are some very wealthy people though who simply don't care about others and their "charitable foundations" are purely the result of a business decision set up for the purpose of giving them tax writeoffs. - That's an honest answer my friend. I'm retired and my additional income (beyond social security which is not taxable) is far below the minimum amount which requires one to file an income tax return. But in the olden days I did list charitable contributions on the tax return. It was not my primary motive because the amount of dollars was really negligible....I've never been that wealthy! There are lots of ways to shield income from taxes without giving to charity. I'm sure most all who give do so because they believe in what they give to. Don't you think it's a bit cynical to ascribe bad motives to all actions by those with wealth?

- Where do you find the word "wealthy" or "rich" in my question kybear? Aren't you reading into my question something which is not there? I did not limit the question to those with wealth. I think if any ascribing is being done here it is you doing it, not me. Thank you for your answer! :)

They do it to help others. The tax writeoff only saves you whatever your tax bracket is. If you kept $5000 instead of donating it, you lose only 25% of that and keep 75% but if you donate it all, you lose 100% of that in order to save 25% in taxes.

We give because we want to. Every season we go through our clothes and give what we no longer want to wear to charity. We give to the health related charities regularly because we like to do it. The write helps a little, but that is not why we give. We decide where our donations go, we don't want someone, or something in our wallet deciding for us.

- We regularly go through our "stuff" and give it to Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Our donations are generally focused on cancer-related causes and anything to do with children. We're retired and our additional income beyond social security( not taxable) is far below the minimum that requires you to file a tax return so we have no writeoffs.
