The transfer case for all four-wheel-drive Ford Explorers is located in line with the engine and transmission. It is positioned under the vehicle at the rear of the transmission, midway between the front and rear wheels. Two-wheel-drive models do not have transfer cases.Source:
the transfer case on a Ford Explorer is mounted just behind the transmission. it was designed to split the power generated by the engine and toward the rear and front axles. for your info, the transfer case must be removed from the vehicle before it can be serviced.
