Piano music evokes different emotions in each listener. Classical music played on a baby grand makes you feel one way, and you will likely have a completely different feeling when you hear jazz, blues or religious music played on the piano. There are also many other wonderful benefits from piano music. Piano music helps with the brain development of young children, particularly those children who take piano lessons. Children who take lessons at a young age learn rhythm and spatial temporal skills that give them an advantage in science, engineering and math-related subjects later in life. Piano music has order, symmetry and rhythmic patterns that help those who listen to it develop verbal skills and memorization skills that help with the retention of information. According to the American Psychological Association, children with musical training have significantly better verbal memory than those who receive no musical training. According to the 2008 "Journal of Research in Music Education," the largest group of new piano students are senior citizens. In a survey conducted by these researchers, they found that seniors benefited from piano lessons by gaining fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment. In the process, they had fun and were able to relieve stress and tension. In the "Medscape Journal of Medicine (June 2008)," researchers reported a study from St. Francis Medical Center in Hawaii in which live classical piano music was played in the operating room during surgery. Results showed a significant decrease in blood pressures, heart rates and respiratory rates of those patients who heard piano music. According to Duane Shinn, author of music therapy materials, piano music is often used to change behaviors. The brain seems to respond favorably to vibrations of piano music, and people's moods are sometimes changed by them. The music seems to soothe people's feelings and positively change their behavior.Brain Development
