Most modern furnaces have filters to aid in their operation. When buying a replacement filter for your furnace, you may have the choice between an OEM filter or a generic filter. Furnace filters remove particles in the air that can damage furnace components, such as the heating coils or fan. Some filters may remove mold, pollen and other harmful materials from the air. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. OEM filters are those made or officially authorized by the manufacturer of the furnace. Generic furnace filters typically are of the same size and similar materials as OEM filters. With some exceptions, OEM filters typically cost more than generics.
