Knowing the difference between a laptop and a notebook computer is confusing with all the choices available. However, there are characteristics of each that benefit all kinds of uses, depending on your computing needs. Technically, the terms laptop and notebook are interchangeable because both allow all-in-one portable computing without being tethered to peripherals such as a monitor or mouse or one stationary setting, like a desk or office. Laptops usually have a larger screen size, ranging from 15" and higher, while Notebooks range from 12" to just under 15." Remember not to confuse Notebooks with netbooks, which are even smaller, lower-powered computers without optical drives. The battery life of notebooks, which can run anywhere from five to eight hours, are typically longer than the two- to four-hour laptops. Many laptops cater to gamers because of better graphics capabilities and higher-end processors and internal sound system. Notebooks generally offer the basics in terms of graphics, since the size limitation inhibits larger graphics cards. Due to portability needs, notebooks are thinner and lighter than laptops, which sometimes offer more function in terms of video outputs, additional expansion ports and sturdiness.
