Coccidiosis, also referred to as Coccidia, is a parasitic condition that causes diarrhea. Pregnant dogs are very vulnerable to this condition due to a weakened immune system, but if treated properly immunity to the condition can be passed on to the puppies. Coccidiosis in any dog, including pregnant dogs, is treated with medication. There are two medications commonly used to treat the disease; sulfadimethoxin, and trimenthoprimsulfadiazine. These drugs prevent the parasites that cause the disease from reproducing. They do not kill the parasites that already exist. These parasites will be allowed to die of natural causes. Typically a dog infected with Coccidiosis is treated for 1 to 3 weeks, but for a pregnant dog expect your vet to administer a longer treatment to help insure that the puppies are not born with live parasites. By not killing the existing parasites, this form of treatment will help the puppies develop an immunity to future coccidiosis infection. To help prevent a pregnant dog from becoming infected with coccidia it is important to keep her area clean and keep the dog from becoming stressed. Any insect or rodent problems should be addressed as they are carriers of the parasite. Peteducation.com: Race Foster DVM: Coccidia (Coccidiosis): A Cause of DiarrheaCommon Treatment
