    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Air shocks are a type of damper used to smoothen the ride and reduce spring rebound in cars and trucks. An air shock is connected to an air pump that keeps the shock inflated.

    Features

As air shocks are filled by an air pump, some systems allow the stiffness and travel of the suspension to be adjusted by the driver.

    Benefits

Air shock systems provide a softer ride than comparable sealed shocks. As a result, this type of system is most commonly found on luxury vehicles, like those form Lincoln and Mercedes-Benz.

    Identification

Air shocks are easily identified because they are connected to an air line that allows bags within the shocks to inflate.

    Warning

Air suspensions and shocks are susceptible to damage. Not only can the air pump wear out over time but the air lines and shocks themselves can be damaged. This results in the vehicle riding very close to the ground when the shocks fail to inflate.

    Expert Insight

Although air shocks provide a luxurious ride, they can be expensive to replace. Many drivers replace failed air shocks with conventional units of the same size.
