It is not uncommon to find great musicians with sight problems. Ray Charles was a blind musician who played the piano, saxophone and clarinet. He and other musicians have proved that even those with vision problems can play instruments just as well as others. Many companies, such as Opus Technologies, offer braille sheet music and sheet music translation. Institutions such as the Academy of Music for the Blind offer courses on how to read braille sheet music and other instruction for vision-impaired musicians. Most string instruments such as the guitar, violin, cello and bass, are a good choice for those with sight problems because the strings can be felt in order. The piano and keyboard can be memorized fairly easily by touch and are also good choices for the vision impaired. The keys are normally organized in a repeating twelve note pattern, from left to right, across the instrument. Woodwinds such as the flute, clarinet and saxophone are also good choices because of their key layout. Someone without eyesight may actually have an advantage over someone with eyesight with such instruments because of the need to have a very tactile memory of key placement. There are no restrictions on what musical instruments a person with sight problems can play as long as he is willing to learn the instrument. Given the right tools and the right mindset, those with vision problems can be just as musically successful as those with 20/20 vision. Because loss of vision is thought to promote a person's other senses, those with loss of vision are also thought to have a better ear and feel for music than those with intact eyesight.
