    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

In the book of Genesis, Rachel is the daughter of Laban, and one of the two wives of Jacob. She is Jacob's true love, and in fact Jacob was tricked by her father, Laban, into marrying her sister Leah first.

    Meaning of the name

    Rachel means "ewe" in Hebrew.

    Pronunciation

In Hebrew, the name is spelled Resh-Het-Lamed. The Hebrew pronunciation involves a gutteral 'ch' sound for the middle consonant. This is the same sound that, for instance, begins the word Channukah.

    How the name fits

In order to gain permission to marry his daughter, Jacob agreed to work for the shepherd Laban (his uncle) for seven years. In other words, in order to gain his "ewe," Jacob had to work Laban's flocks. Tricked into marrying Leah, Jacob works another seven years for Rachel.

Other uses of Rachel to mean ewe

Other places in the Hebrew Bible where the word rachel means "ewe" but is not the name of the person are Genesis 31:28 and 32:15, Isaiah 53:7, and Song of Songs 6:6.

    Not a theophoric name

Many Hebrew names that end in -el are theophoric; that is, they contain a name for God. Examples of this are Michael (meaning "Who is like God?") and Ezekiel ("God strengthened me"). Rachel is not a theophoric name, and the -el sound is coincidental.

    Another Jacob-Rachel match.

Another famous Jacob/Rachel couple was Rabbi Akiva (died ca. 135 CE) and his wife Rachel. Akiva is an Aramaic form of Jacob. Rachel has long been a popular name for women, especially in Jewish communities.

The girl's name Rachael \r(a)-chael\ is a variant of Rachel (Hebrew), and the meaning of Rachael is "ewe, female sheep".

In the Bible, the name is spelled Rachel.
