The Jack Russell Terrier is a small breed of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club as the Parson Russell Terrier. It is a confident, alert and active dog that makes an excellent pet, with proper training and care. The Jack Russell Terrier was first bred by Rev. John Russell in the mid-1800s. The breed stems primarily from the Welsh Corgi and other terrier breeds. While the Jack Russell terrier was originally intended as a fox-hunting dog in England, it is now more commonly kept as a household pet. Jack Russells are often used in agility and obedience trials. Jack Russells are outgoing and friendly, displaying lots of affection. The breed is generally good with children, although they will not tolerate rough handling. The Jack Russell is athletic and intelligent. They are high-energy dogs, playful and active, requiring lots of exercise. Jack Russell terriers measure between 13 and 14 inches at the shoulder. They usually weigh between 13 and 17 pounds, with a relatively lean body. The coat can be either smooth or wiry and is primarily white with red or black spots. Jack Russell terriers have a clean silhouette, relatively narrow muzzle and perked ears.History
