A revered aspect of Buddhism, the Eight Spoked Wheel has come to symbolize Buddha, who is known as the Wheel Turner for his ability to set a new cycle of teachings in motion and change the course of destiny. The spokes of the Eight Spoke Wheel represent wisdom and symbolize the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path, which calls for correctness in thought, speech, action, livelihood, understanding, effort, mindfulness and concentration. Aside from its spokes, the Eight Spoke Wheel also features an outer rim, which represents concentration, and an inner hub, which stands for moral discipline. The hub also features three swirling segments to signify Buddha, Dharma (teachings) and Sangha (spiritual community). Buddha delivered his first sermon at Varanasi in India. This initial teaching is said to have set in motion the wheel of Dharma, providing the basis for his connection to the Eight Spoked Wheel. The Eight Spoked Wheel is also known as the Dharmachakra, which is a combination of the Sanskrit words "dharma," meaning truth and "chakra," meaning wheel. The Eight Spoked Wheel is one of the eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism along with the conch shell, the lotus, the parasol, the endless knot, the pair of golden fishes, the banner proclaiming victory and the treasure vase.
