The human eye is made up of many different shapes, sizes and colors. Children inherit their eye color from a combination of the mother's and the father's genes. Eye color depends on the amount of pigment, also known as, melanin, found in the iris and how it is distributed. Light gray-blue eyes contain less pigment than very dark brown eyes. Darker eyes are also less sensitive to the sun. There are three different types of brown eyes. There are light brown, brown and dark brown. Light brown eyes are also known as copper or amber-colored eyes. Dark brown eyes have a lot of pigment, making them almost black. There are three different types of blue eyes. Blue eyes range from light blue to blue to dark blue. Blue eyes are the most sensitive to the sun. Because a person is more likely to inherit brown eyes than blue eyes, blue eyes are becoming less common in modern generations. There are two different shades of green eyes. Light green and dark green. This shade is the rarest of all eye colors. A person with green eyes will have moderate sensitivity to the sun. When a person has hazel eyes, different pupil sizes and lighting can make the eye appear to be a different color. Hazel eyes sometimes look more green and other times a light shade of brown. This eye color's sensitivity to the sun is similar to that of brown eyes. Athro Limited; Inheriting Eye ColorMelanin
