Help answer this question below.
It took far more construction material, and is quite a bit longer in all than the Great Wall is.
Shouldn't the highway system be one of the wonders of the modern world?
For one thing it's far from unique, and for another it's probably not even the best in the world.
Good point.... & they're both crumbling ruins too!
I would hope not. The Great Wall of China was built back when there were not machines to do the work for us. A lot of people's lives were lost and buried in that wall which was built by their blood, sweat and tears. Most of the United States highways were done by machine (at least now a days) and I doubt as many lives were lost. It may take more material and was probably a sigh of relief for many, but it has no where near as much of a story behind it for it to be a wonder of the world. And like Brian said... it's no where near unique. There are high ways everywhere.
Also, the Great Wall of China is a historic monument that gave the hermit country a whole new meaning. High ways are a way for lazy people or those in a rush to get somewhere faster. That's all.
You obviously haven't seen the European highway system, but in any event, it too was machine made, as opposed to the GW of C which was built by human sweat and blood and can be seen from space. (I am one who believes that the rest of the world chipped in to build it to keep the Chinese IN).

You're reading Why don't we marvel in the US Interstate Highway System as much as the Great Wall of China?

Not the best maintained, but the largest in the world by far.

Isn't that confusing quantity with quality?
by Brian I on February 13th, 2010
Not confusing the two no. Being the largest in the world is itself something to marvel. In no other country can you get to so many places by highway.
