And you know that how? Where did you get that statistic? A "reliable" source or a source funded by wealthy people who don't want to help anyone? Just because someone says something doesn't make it true. Have you investigated, examined, verified that 90%? I think we should help those in need. Happy Monday tgbtb! :)

Sure. Let's start by taking back all the bailout money and the bonuses that resulted after that. If that ain't corporate welfare, I dunno what is

Not completely. I do think we should drastically cut down on it though. If you are able to work, then you should be required to work. Screw the idea of "jobs Americans don't want to do". Send able bodied individuals out to the fields to pick the produce. We dont need to import this labor, we have the labor force right here. Drug test those sucking on the public teet. Dont reward irresponsibility with welfare. I you are going to have children, make sure you can afford them first, why should I have to pay or it, I am having a hard enough time paying for the raising of my own children. That's a tough question especially in these economic times. There are people signing up for it who never took a handout in their lives.

Sorry that you think that way. I lost my job after15 years and went back to school to better myself. For me it is a somewhat of a lifesaver. All I get is foodstamps and heath insurance, that is it! Don't pay anyother bills for me.

I worked for 10 years for an American auto company and, like many others, was pushed out due to outsourcing and unethical business practices....am I "lazy"???? And it wasn't just the auto workers who were laid off it was teachers, engineers, etc. etc.! Would you like to see people who've been robbed of their livelihood by corporate greed and corruption at a time when finding another job is nearly impossible starving and living on the streets? There is corruption by those who CAUSE poverty and there is corruption by those taking advantage of the system we have in place to help those in poverty. I'm sure the idea of taking away welfare is a major goal of elitists. I guess we all have to pick which side we want to be on! I prefer to be against the CAUSE of poverty not the small amount of those using welfare wrongly. They're no more a ganster than those in big business!

Yes except for the truly disabled and I mean TRULY disabled. I know one too many people that have four kids, never worked, me and you as taxpayers work and supply them over $500 a month in groceries. However she sells this for cash and buys drugs with it. She and her children are all on Medicaid and to put the icing on the cake, the children live with their grandparents and she, the mother is never with them and never actually buys food for them. Then she also has a way of working for herself, a fraud and gets money back at tax time. HAHA I don't think people that gets all of this assistance all year should not get a refund at the end of the year on top of it.

No we should not do away with welfare. I'm sure there is abuse; that's where the work needs to be done.

Sorry, this is long, but I don't see any shorter way to make the point clear.

    1. What is your definition of "welfare"?

If you are talking about all government aid that comes from the health and welfare departments of federal and state governments, then you need to look at a larger picture. This includes SNAP ("food stamps"), Medicaid, Medicare, family and child protection services (whatever they are called in your state, it varies), TANF (true "welfare" checks), WIC (health and welfare assessments, food and formula vouchers, parenting advice, and immunizations), daycare assistance, among others. This includes aid for the elderly to maintain proper food, self-care, and shelter. This includes aid for children to afford vaccinations so that they can attend school and prevent infection of the general population with infectious diseases. This includes parenting advice for young mothers who may not know how to care for their children. This includes investigations into reports of child abuse and neglect. You want all of this to stop? Unbelievable!

If you mean TANF (Temporary Aid to Needy Families), then you are probably not aware of how incredibly difficult it is to receive. You cannot own any assets, not even a car worth more than $2000. You have to have proof of spending 30 hours per week applying for jobs with no success. This means actual time filling out applications, not researching jobs, not transportation time to interviews or places to get applications, not writing resumes, not attending workshops on how to succeed in an interview or what to wear, just filling out apps and actual interview time. Even then, the amount received is either a small lump sum to pay current overdue bills, or less than $300/month even with 3+ children. Believe me, you cannot be lazy to continue receiving TANF. If you do not meet your 30 hours, not only do the checks stop, but you are forbidden to receive it again for the next 3 years.

If you are talking about Unemployment insurance, this is not even "welfare". These people have paid into the system, and their employers have paid into the system so that they can have a safety net for a short time while they look for something to pay the bills. Unemployment, depending on the state, pays 25% to 42% of the person's previous income up to a specific cap. So, for instance, someone in Texas who has previously made $150K/year and has easily supported 3 children before the whole department at their company is laid off suddenly finds themselves trying to support their family on $392/week. That wouldn't even cover most people's mortgages or rent with a family that size. Forget the phone, the water, the power, the car, insurance, we're just talking the roof over their heads.

    2. People on welfare are lazy.
I don't see how walking or driving (if you still have a beat up car, insurance, and the gas to put in your tank, certainly a rarity at that point) from place to place only counting the time you are actually talking to hiring managers and/or filling out applications to meet the 30 hours per week requirement is lazy.

Again, if you are talking about general health and welfare services, you are calling the disabled lazy, retired people no longer able to work lazy, children under the age they are allowed to legally work lazy, single parents who need help to pay for child care so they can work lazy (don't get on your moral high horse here, you don't know if they are widowed or the victims of abusive relationships or abandoned or what), those who have children they once could afford, but they have had to take a cut in pay lazy, victims of elderly and child abuse LAZY.

I think you need to inform yourself and reassess your stance.

Can you justify that figure of 90%, or is that just your prejudice? Of course there are some people on welfare - there will always be people who take advantage, and in the good times when all the honest ones can find work, they may be the majority. But in bad times, the increase in the number on welfare is due to honest people who have fallen on bad times. Even if your figure was correct in the boom times a few years ago, which I doubt, I would invite you to show evidence that it is correct today.

I feel it needs to be more regulated then it is now.
Have more rescrictions. ( say a high school degree is a must)
and cut offs on how long they can recevied help. ( say 1 year at the most)
I know a ton of folks who are denied food stamps because they make $5 to much.
and seniors citzens only can get $10.00 a month and folks who are dripping in gold and drive much better cars than most get hundreds every month.
    that stuff needs to stop.

Instead of banning welfare, we need to ban people who think like you. Everyone gets some kind of government assistance.

Have you or your family ever used roads, postal services, sent your children to school, or received protection from foreign countries oppression? The government offers a lot of services besides welfare.

Besides, Clinton signed welfare reform. People are now cut off after a certain period of time. There are not many lazy people anymore. Your statistics are just plain out wrong.

I have no problem paying my taxes so a family man or woman, laid off due to corporate corruption, can feed his/her family.

Would you rather see your tax dollars go to bail out investment bankers so they can collect obscene bonuses? Where is the outrage when the government cuts taxes for the wealthy or bails out corporations?

I think your views are just mean spirited.

Let it be known that there are plenty of people who work that recieve welfare too. It depends on your income. I don't call these people lazy. They just need a little help. If you are working and not having ends meet, then maybe you should ask for help too. Come in, bring proof of income, and we'll see what we can do for you.

Yes. The government should absolutely GET OUT of the business of making entire segments of the population dependant upon her oh so generous largess. And to all the people preaching about "it helps people get back on their feet"...HA!....REALLY? That big fat chunck O' change...it barely keeps the lights on. Plus how demoralizing is it to not stand on your own...I don't know just ask the 200 WHITE girls and mexican and black girls that live near me, never worked and ALL have at least 2 kids and 2 baby daddys...all of them. All 600 no 800 individuals involved are dependents on the government...THERE HAS NEVER NOR WILL THERE EVER BE A PROUD DEPENDANT. Oh but the idiots in power love it...simply put...its a bribe...hey, take $11 a day from it and u can go to the 'done clinic...free food and dope and some cash, all that just for becoming part of a permanent underclass...sign me up!! Oh wait...I'm sorry, those people just need the welfare to "get back on their feet" and the methadone helps them stay "off drugs" BWAHHAAHHAAHHAAHHAA! YEA, I USED TO BELIEVE THAT...I ALSO USED TO BE REALLY HIGH ALL THE TIME.

Yes! Welfare keeps people in poverty. They don't have respect for anything, because everything in their life is handed to them by the government. Why would they work for a living to make money, if they recieve free handouts once a month?

Where do you get your stats, because they are wrong. I do believe that we should invest more into literacy programs so that people like you can learn to spell words like SHOULD and WELFARE correctly. I am a case worker and I have seen countless people who have lost jobs during the recession. Most people aren't on welfare because they are lazy. Also you and others who think like you should be careful what you say, because you could loose your job sooner than you think and end up in my office looking for help!
