Help answer this question below.
Well its sad to say things aren't the same as they used to be. In my school February is when they decide to throw us huge Black History projects. I prefer to learn about Black people as well as other cultures all year-round. Why put a limit, date and time on things we should have been learning our whole lives? I suppose times have changed and so have people morals.
Is this typical? Typical for what? You're just using Answerbag as a platform for your dime-a-dozen opinion. It's barely even a question. Good job!
How can black history month be a year long event? It is black history MONTH! It highlights a specific culture and brings into focus the importance of that culture to our history. You don't need to acknowledge or focus on it if you choose not to and nothing is preventing you from focusing on other cultures at the same time. I believe this type of rhetoric is one of the reasons Americans have so many problems. You see the glass as half empty instead of half full and in so doing add fuel to the fires of prejudice and unrest. Shame on you.
I believe that Black History Month is the biggest bullshit ever. There is
no Native American history month there is no Asian history month, and
there is no white history month. If there was a white history month black
people would trip out and bitch to the government and riot and shit until
it was no more. Thats how they made the "N" word illegal, thats how they
got all black colleges (even though it would be racist to have all white or
all hispanic colleges) and thats also how they got BET that would be wrong
if it was WET lol they would have a fit. I would love for there to be a WET
(white entertainment television) just cause its "wet" when abbreviated lol

You're reading Black History month seems to be a year-long event, leaving very little room for any other (non-racially specific) history. Is this typical?

I wholeheartedly agree. I remember asking my father as a child, "since this is black history month, when is Russian history month? Or Chinese history month, etc.?"
At the time I didn't realize how relevant a question it was, I was just sick of hearing about Martin Luther King for the millionth time. There's a lot of rich history out there, unfortunately they're killing interest in it by cramming the same things down our throats over and over.

I don't understand this response. No one is putting limits on anyone. By choosing one specific month to honor or celebrate any group/heritage/culture does not mean that you can't honor and celebrate it during the remaining 11 months. We are free to celebrate whenever and whatever we want to. Choosing a specific time is only bringing it into focus not limiting it.

@Juxtapose That's true schools never expand the variety of Black people we learn about we always get the same variety. I just decided at a early age not to depend on school to teach me ALL I need to know so i ventured and started teaching myself.
@Catlover-The Original Original Your opinion is your opinion I respect it. But this discussion is about SCHOOL. Thats what I'm trying to make a point of.I never said other cultures cant be honored.
by ClassyCee on February 6th, 2010
I guess classycee what I was objecting to in your response is you asking why put a time limit on it because we should be learning about cultures all year long. My point is there is nothing preventing you from learning about other cultures during the year while celebrating Black History month in February. To me your question is about the same as asking why do we have to celebrate our birthday or wedding anniversary one day a year. Why don't we celebrate our existence or our marriage all year round. Well the fact is you can if you choose to but that one day of the year makes it a special day of celebration.

I feel like your writing all this extra for no reason. The part about you saying nothing is preventing from learning all year is pointless because i specifically said "I prefer to learn about Black people as well as other cultures all year-round." Me saying "Why put a limit, date and time on things we should have been learning our whole lives?" is a rhetorical question. I never said that someone is putting a time limit on anything. So,hey at the end of the day there will always be people who will disagree with you. That's why it's called having an opinion; we all have them. Have a great day.
by ClassyCee on February 6th, 2010
With all due respect I believe you are the one who is writing for no reason. Rhetorical questions hardly have a place on a Q & A site. Silly me for thinking you were actually asking a question or meant what you said.
by CatLover-The Original is Proudly Canadian on February 6th, 2010
You must be having a bad day. What a shame. It's not my fault that you cant except others opinions. Your letting one response get you all upset; so it seems. Well as Ive said before have a nice day. " Rhetorical questions hardly have a place on Q&A sites" So you make the rules now?
by ClassyCee on February 7th, 2010
Believe me when I say you are not important enough to upset me about anything. You ask a question on a question and answer site and then say it was rhetorical. You make a statement and then say you didn't mean what you said. No, I don't make the rules but anyone with a brain in their head would understand that a Q & A site stands for Questions and Answers, not rhetorical questions that you don't want answers to. That kind of defeats the whole reason for the site now doesn't it. Never mind that was rhetorical.
I was operating in the hope of having an interesting discourse with a mature, intelligent person. I was wrong on all levels. This is not interesting nor are you mature or intelligent. You do however sound like you have a chip on your shoulder so I will leave you to your rhetoric and move on keeping your avatar and name in mind so I won't bother with anything you post in the future. Perhaps you could pay me the same courtesy. Oops, another rhetorical question. My bad!

Your response was too long i didn't take the time to read it. Stop wasting your time. I'm ending this conversation. Something must be terribly wrong with you. You must take pride in criticizing.
by ClassyCee on February 7th, 2010
I am glad you feel our sentiment. for 11 months our children listen to white history. Your children are more privilege; they only have to listen to black history for a WHOLE 28 days. Black children have to listen to your white history for 237 days.
by Nabihigh on February 16th, 2010
Yes that's true but my point is in my school they really don't expand Black History knowledge as they should. Perfect example is now. We havent done any Black History projects. The only thing they do is name one Black inventor each morning on announments. Other than that its like a regular month.
