Gladiators were celebrities intended for amusement. Not only did they stir up people's bloodlust by partaking in combat, but they also caused women to become arroused and they would find other means for the gladiators to amuse them - by proving their sexual prowess.
You could compare it to today - many people have sexual fantasies about famous actors or sports stars. So surely they would jump at the opportunity to see those desires fulfilled...
