Much like human mothers, canine mothers show several outward signs of pregnancy when they are expecting. A dog's physical appearance changes when she is pregnant. A change in the nipples is the first outward sign that a dog is pregnant. They are normally small and flat, but after about two weeks of pregnancy, they will become larger and darker in color. The fur around the nipples will also start to thin out. This allows easier access for puppies once they are born. A pregnant dog will go through morning sickness. She may not vomit that much, but she will most likely lose her appetite and not eat. An enlarged abdomen is a sure sign that the dog is pregnant. The stomach will feel hard and solid rather than soft and fatty. Also, a person would be able to feel the puppies moving around in the dog's tummy and possibly count how many there are. A definite number can't be determined, however, without an ultrasound. A pregnant dog will show signs of restlessness and irritability. She may be constantly grooming herself and looking around for a good place to raise her pups.Nipples
