    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Gastric bypass surgery is a major procedure that makes the stomach of an overweight person smaller to facilitate weight loss. The idea is that the person who has the surgery cannot eat as much and therefore loses weight. Eating habits are hard to break, though, and some people who have had the surgery are tempted to graze, or snack throughout the day, as they did before. It is a habit that needs to be curbed to ensure consistent, long-term weight loss.

    Understanding Grazing Habits

Try to understand why you are grazing. Get out a pen and paper, and write down what times of day you graze, what you are doing when you snack, what type of food you grab and how you feel when you are eating it.

    How to Stop Grazing

If you have undergone a gastric bypass and still grazing, you need to change your ways immediately. The first step is having an eating plan. You can make a weekly or a daily plan, deciding on exactly what you will eat at each meal. Set meal times and sit down at a table.
Meals should be eaten three times a day and should last for about 20 minutes. Chew your food slowly and thoroughly. It is best to eat meals that contain protein, whole grains, fruit and vegetables. High-fiber foods slow down digestion, which helps you feel full longer. High-protein foods are also filling.
Next, go through your cupboards and refrigerator and throw out unhealthy foods such as potato chips, candy, ice cream, soft drinks, chocolates, cookies and other snacks that contain lots of sugar and calories. You should also avoid foods that are fried, processed and fatty.
If you feel the urge to graze, drink a glass of water instead. The water will help you feel full.
Finally, put a support system in place so that in moments of weakness you can call and friend instead of reaching for the food.
