When e-filing your tax return, you can expect a refund in eight to 15 days. If you mail your tax return, you'll receive a check in six to eight weeks. A tax refund can be tracked 72 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of your e-filed return. It takes three to four weeks before you can track a mailed tax return. Visit the Internal Revenue Service's Where's My Refund? website. Click on the "Where's My Refund?" link to fill out a form requesting your refund status. If it's more convenient, call the IRS at 1-800-829-4477 to obtain status information about your tax refund. To track a state tax refund, log on to your state's department of revenue website. Click the link that says "Check your refund." Indicate the year of the tax refund you're tracking. Provide your Social Security number, tax filing status and refund amount to track your tax refund. This information is required whether tracking a state or federal tax return. Give the information to the customer service representative over the phone, or on the appropriate state or IRS website. To track a tax refund, the information must be an exact match to that on your tax return.Federal Tax Refund
